Introducing Tipping Point, a ripplescape about climate change. The artwork expresses the turbulent conditions we are currently experiencing in the wake of decades of global warming.
Tipping Point is about a subject close to my heart. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. I was one of thousands demonstrating in the streets of Paris for climate action. It is disheartening to see how the agreement has virtually disappeared from the global agenda, while few of its intentions have been realised.
Climate stripes
Tipping Point is inspired by and builds on the ‘climate stripes’ – a colour chart of global annual temperatures proposed by climate scientist Ed Hawkins in 2018 to visualise climate change. The stripes are doing a great job of making people aware of global warming, but I feel we need complementary imagery to help grasp today’s turbulent climate dynamics.
The climate stripes in Tipping Point cover 64 years, from 1960 to 2024. Towards the end of this period, the stripes give way to a ripplescape, representing the turbulent climate dynamics we have experienced globally in recent years.
